Classic Greek Salad Recipe

This classic Greek salad recipe captures the essence of Mediterranean cuisine, with its fresh ingredients, simple preparation, and vibrant flavors. It’s perfect for a quick lunch, a dinner side, or a picnic dish.


  • 3 medium ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced into thick half-moons
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 cup Kalamata olives, pitted
  • 200 grams (about 7 ounces) feta cheese, cut into thick slices or cubed
  • 2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1-2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Dried oregano, to sprinkle
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

  • Prepare the Vegetables:
    • Wash the tomatoes, cucumber, and green bell pepper. Cut the tomatoes into wedges, slice the cucumber into thick half-moons, and slice the green bell pepper. Peel and thinly slice the red onion.
  • Assemble the Salad:
    • In a large salad bowl, combine the tomato wedges, cucumber slices, sliced red onion, and green bell pepper. Add the Kalamata olives.
  • Add the Feta:
    • Place the feta cheese on top of the salad. You can either lay a large slice on top or cube the feta and scatter it throughout the salad.
  • Dress the Salad:
    • Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar over the salad. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Sprinkle dried oregano generously on top.
  • Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Gently toss the salad before serving to combine the flavors, being careful not to break the feta cheese too much.
  • Enjoy:
    • Serve the salad immediately, or let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Enjoy as a refreshing side dish or a light main course.
