Mediterranean Diet and A “Whole Foods” Diet

There are many ways to explain why the Mediterranean diet is good for people. You can get into the nutritional science and talk about how fat works with the body to arrange various levels of cholesterol – or you can bring a refreshingly simple perspective that clearly shows why the Mediterranean diet is so powerful for your personal health.

Here it is in a nutshell – the Mediterranean diet is essentially a ‘whole foods’ diet. It’s back to basics. It promotes the idea that we can eat as our ancestors did when they made their homes in little fishing villages and lived off the land.

To once again boil it down to its very simplest premise – the Mediterranean diet includes a lot of vegetables, which grow in the ground, and fish, which you catch in waterways. There’s also a lot of dairy products, which you get by practicing animal husbandry which goes back thousands of years.

Here’s what there’s not a lot of – processed carbs. Factory bread and Doritos and beef jerky and yellow number five.

You get the idea.

The Mediterranean diet excludes a lot of the factory-produced food that is carrying a lot of the high fructose corn syrup, refined flowers and high sodium elements that are having a negative effect on human health.

Instead, it promotes eating a lot of plant matter, which has healthy antioxidants and statins that can radically improve long-term quality of life and longevity.

There’s a lot more to say about the Mediterranean diet – for example, how it compares to the keto diet, or a vegetarian diet for that matter. But when you understand the basic fundamental approach of eating whole, unprocessed foods, you start to see how this diet works practically. For example, Europeans resist factory farming, both as a philosophy and as a revolution that brings them those processed foods that they know are bad for human consumption in general. On the other hand, those processed carbs and junk food goodies came to America early, with an apogee in the 1950s. But that doesn’t mean you have to eat the stuff! A Mediterranean diet is a great road map to looking and feeling better, and using the power of natural whole food to live longer with a better quality of life.
